HOPE Statement on Anti-Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander Violence and Discrimination

Dear HOPE Community,

HOPE stands united with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. As the country witnesses an increase in discrimination and violence against this vital segment of our population, we recognize that this directly affects members of our staff, board, volunteers, and residents. This tragic issue is not new. Historic and systemic racism against this community and other people of color has been present for hundreds of years in our country. It has manifested itself in discriminatory public policy that continues to this day to negatively impact Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islanders’ lives, including their access to housing. We must also acknowledge that racism and sexism are often interconnected, with both frequently present in the current surge in anti-Asian attacks.

This year, HOPE has launched an internal campaign to enhance our diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in an effort to effect greater change on this issue through our mission to create affordable housing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Today, we wish to elevate AAPI nonprofit organizations’ voices that are directly addressing this social justice issue and are on the front lines of responding to the recent heartbreaking surge in hate crimes. We support the below statements and urge you to learn more about these organizations and to contribute to their essential work.
